Taping and Bandaging
Taping can be used to prevent an injury occurring, to isolate or even to support an injury, whereas bandaging is mainly used for the immediate treatment of injury. If taping or bandaging techniques are not done properly, it wont be effective in controlling or preventing injuries in soccer.
Preventative Taping
Preventative taping can lower the risk of an injury occurring, reduce the severity of an injury to the ligament and provide additional support while performing certain movements. A player who wears supportive taping, for example, taping around the ankle, will reduce the risk of receiving an ankle injury when they participate in the soccer game or training. |
Taping for isolation of injury
When an athlete is injured, taping can be used to help limit the movement of the muscles and joints involved when participating. For example, limiting the movement in the ankle will prevent further damage to the area, restrict any swelling and will also ease the pain.
Bandaging for Immediate Treatment of Injury
Bandaging is commonly used for the treatment of soft tissue injuries. It compresses the injured site, helping reduce any swelling, can provide support for a joint or muscle as well as restricts movement. The correct technique and firmness of the bandage must be applied to the injured area for it to be effective. For example, if a player rolls their ankle or hurts their wrist by falling down in soccer training or during the game, they can apply a bandage around their ankle to support and aid the injury.
